I mention docks or marinas. Well, here again these folks that have slips for their boats will also put out attractors so it will help them catch the Crappie Slabs.

You will be surprised at all the tell tale signs that are on a lake if you open your eyes and do a little pre-scouting before you head out to catch crappie.

I have been harping about how the Corp of Engineers in Mississippi has let most the water out of the lakes for winter pool. The only good thing about the water level being drawn down is if you can get your boat in the lake, this is another good way to see where to fish. While the water is down, it will show all the things that a lot of us drive over and never knew what was below us.

Take some pictures and make sure that you get some of the bank in the picture so when the lake is back up and you are not sure; pull out the picture and try to place your boat where it lines up with the picture You will know that you are right on top of that brush pile, tree or shipping pallets.

O.K. now if you have not noticed I just covered wood. How about rocks? 

Fishing Rock Structures

Look around the Marinas; usually the bank has ricks that lead out into the water and the past sunny day has warmed up the rock. The water in that area will be a little warmer than the rest of the lake and you can get in on some early Crappie fishing.

Crappie like rocks so this is one of the places I am going to keep my eyes open for signs.

Fishing Grassy Areas:

Last but not least are the grassy areas of a lake. A lot of time in the back of the coves when the lake was at winter pool; it gave the grass a chance to grow. Crappie love this type of cover not only to lay eggs, but it also attracts bait fish.

The Crappie do not have to go looking for a meal. It will swim right up to them while they are busy spawning.

I have covered what I look for and given away a few secrets in catching some crappie slabs. Now it is up to you to do a little home work and you to can fill up your freezer. Good Luck
